Hanoi travel guide info

Hochiminh complex
Many people around the world seem to know the name of Ho Chi Minh, however the extent to what people understand about his special life is still not much. Packing in your tour to Vietnam Ho Chi Minh complex, you will full fill an interesting trip discovering the recently brave history of this ever-war country. This tour takes you half day to gain insight the beauty of the complex.  Ho Chi Minh was respected a national hero who lead the country to fight and got independence from the French colonists which was set up for nearly one century in Vietnam. Moreover, for each of Vietnamese people, he was a great father with the most simple manner and great sympathy for each life. It is the reason why people around the country kindly called him Uncle Ho.Ho Chi Minh complex which includes Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, Presidential Palace, House on Stilt, Ho Chi Minh museum are such lively architectures to honor Ho Chi Minh and a good place for everyone who wishes to know about his life. Ho Chi Minh complex stands on the political heart of the capital while surroundings are many classical French buildings and Ba Dinh square, which creates a very peaceful place worth visiting.
Within the complex, there is a well-known pagoda due to its special style – One pilar pagodas built 1000 years ago based on the dream of the King. The one pillar pagoda now becomes a symbol of Hanoi
Note: The complex opens from 8:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00 except Monday and Friday( Mausoleum closes in the afternoon)

Temple of Literature
Tourists, particularly the foreign ones, now flock to the site for taking a look into its profound traditional meanings of both a Confucion temple and the first university of Vietnam. Văn Miếu or Temple of Literature, known as "pagode des Corbeaux" during the period of French colonisation, was founded as a Confucian temple in 1070.
Only parts of the Văn Miếu complex date back to the earliest period, although much of the architecture dates to the Ly (1010 – 1225) and Tran (1225 – 1400) Dynasties. In 1076, Vietnam's first university, the Quốc Tử Giám (or National University), was established within this temple to educate Vietnam's mandarin class. The university functioned for more than 700 years, from 1076 to 1779, during which, 2,313 doctors graduated. Hence, the complex has been attached to the name of Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam up to now.

Museum of Ethnology.
This is the most recent yet probably the largest and undoubtedly the most interesting Museums in Hanoi and Vietnam. The Museum comes out of the recognition that Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country and that more attention should be paid to promote socio-cultural diversity. Despite being out of the way compared with other museums in Hanoi, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is worth a thorough visit, for those who are keen to learn about the multiculturality of Vietnam and for those who would appreciate some green space.

Tran Quoc pagoda
Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi is the oldest pagoda constructed in the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De. Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi was supposedly founded 1,400 years ago by King Ly Nam De with the name Khai Quoc (National Founder). At first it was built outside the Yen Phu Dyke and the move to West Lake. Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi was then named Khai Quoc, meaning "founding the country." It has been named An Quoc, Tran Quoc and Tran Bac. With architecture harmonious with nature, the pagoda complements the beautiful scenery around the lake. One of the present statues inside Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi was fashioned in 1639.

Hoa lo prison
For sheer gruesome atmosphere alone, this ranks near the top of the must-see list. It was constructed by the French in 1896 mainly to house political prisoners, and the Vietnamese took it over in 1954. It was subsequently used to house prisoners of war. From 1964 to 1973, it was a major POW detention facility. U.S. Sen. John McCain was a particularly famous inmate, as was Pete Peterson, the ambassador to Vietnam, and Lt. Everett Alvarez, officially the first American pilot to be shot down over Vietnam. Their stories are told from the Vietnamese perspective in photographs and writings grouped in one small room. To the west is the guillotine room, still with its original equipment, and the female and Vietnamese political prisoners' quarters. The courtyard linking the two has parts of original tunnels once used by a hundred intrepid Vietnamese revolutionaries to escape in 1945. Only part of the original complex is left; the rest of the original site was razed and is ironically occupied by a tall, gleaming office complex popular with foreign investors. There are basic English explanations, but this is a good spot to have a guide, who is certain to be armed with a tale or two.

The old house 87 Ma May street
The 87 Ma May house is a classic example of late 19th-century housing in Hanoi's Old Quarter. It was renovated by a UNESCO-funded organization to a close approximation of its original condition. Many houses in the Old Quarter are known as "tube houses" since they can be as long as 70 meters and as narrow as two meters--this developed as an attempt to minimize taxes, as each property was taxed according to the width of the street-facing facade. To allow for sufficient light in these narrow dwellings, it was necessary to design multiple courtyards along the length of each house. Although the 87 Ma May house is comparatively wide, it was designed along the same principals.
